Recently there has been much public discussion around credit rating agencies and problems in the subprime mortgage market. As the foremost provider of credit ratings, Standard & Poor’s (“S&P”) believes it is important that any dialogue about credit ratings be based on accurate information about how credit ratings agencies work and how ratings are used.
This special section of our website has been designed to give readers a better understanding of the role S&P’s ratings play in capital markets; the thoroughness, transparency and integrity of our approach; and the rigor of our decision-making processes.
Current conditions in the subprime mortgage market and in related capital markets are complex issues and important topics. We welcome public discussion and hope the press releases, reports, commentaries, editorials and Podcasts presented here, as well as on S&P’s main website, will help put recent market developments in perspective and provide a deeper understanding of the role ratings agencies play in global markets.
